I'm not sure this is a plumbing question, but can I install a niche in the wall above the shower head in my bathroom? My contractor seems to think not, that the niche would be too high to wipe out and keep dry, and even if the floor of the niche were canted any condensation would collect and cause rot to the underlying framing wood behind the shower wall. I don't know why that would be true if the area were properly water barriered like the rest of the shower walls, but can't find any info online about positioning a niche in this area. Can anyone give some advice here? Thanks.

Hi!
Installing a niche above the shower head is doable, but your contractor’s concerns are valid. The main issues are accessibility for cleaning and the potential for moisture problems. If you decide to go ahead, ensuring the niche is properly waterproofed and has a slight slope to prevent water collection is crucial. Even with these precautions, it’s important to be aware of the potential for moisture to cause rot in the underlying framing over time. If possible, consider getting a second opinion from another contractor experienced with high niches to ensure it’s done right and meets your needs effectively.
Let me know if you need any further assistance, thank you!
