  • Clogged Roof Vent

My roof vent is clogged that vents 2 sinks and a toilet. When we do dishes in the kitchen sink and drain it, the other sink in the next room plop plops, or what I believed sucks air. Going on this hunch, I got up on my roof and looked down the vent stack. Low and behold I saw stuff blocking it about 10' down. This is a 3 story 130 year old victorian style home and the option of a basement cleanout is non-exesistent. Any clean out I see has to be done from 3 floors up outside the house on a ladder.
I tried a garden hose with the water off to try and "punch" through, no luck too flexable. Then for a short time with water but stopped for fear of filling the vent up with too much water. It did seem to either drain very slowly or just soak in.
I then took about 15' of 1/2" pipe and inserted it into the roof vent opening. I was able to sink it tin the blockage about 6" then it stopped, not by metal to metal but just by the blockage material stuff itself. I was a little too leary of exerting too much force for fear of loosening the vent stack someplace in the wall and causing a leak.
Getting a power auger is too dangerious with out a cherry picker. roof is too pitched to stand on.
WHAT are my options? Can I poor a drain cleaner down, something real nasty? Is the power auger option my only chance?

After taking a ride to my local HomeDepot tool rental department, I walked out with a Small power auger. This model is attached to a corded drill and has 25' of cable on it. Well it took about 2 hrs and a little water and she broke free. The drill auger is an excellent option for under 20' blockages where a larger stationery power auger in not in the cards. And BEST thing about it, only $22 for a 4 hour rental. Alot better then going a different route I thinking about...............PROBLEM SOLVED
