My water supply pipes have recently started making an excessively loud, pulsating "whooshing" noise. One can actually see the pipe coming into the house moving. What could be causing this?

If your main supply is jumping around that is a problem, This is called water hammer and can cause major damage to you plumbing. The only thing that causes water hammer is a quick closing valve like whats on your washing machine and dish washer . If this problem just started there could be 3 reasons that I can think off, The first is that you have air arrestors in your walls that relied on a cushion of air in them to operate they will slowely lose the air in them and the way to fix the problem is to turn off the water and open up the sink and tub faucets and flush the toilets and totaly drain the water lines in the house which will let the air back in. The other one is that you live in the country and your air tank is water logged and needs to be pressurized with air. And last but not least is that you live in town and you have a pressure regulator that is acting up
