  • Is Water Expansion Tank Broke?

I have a Watts DET-5 Potable water expansion tank. The unit was installed 4 years ago, about 36" before the gas water heater. Recently I notice the water heater pressure relief valve began to have an occasional discharge. And the drain valve on the water heater developed a slight drip. I took a pressure reading of the expansion tank, it was 0. The tank felt like it might be filled with water. Can I recharge the tank with a bicycle pump or should I replace it? Do I need to drain the expansion tank?

If you press the air valve on the expansion tank does water come out of it?

If the answer is yes than the bladder is broken and the tank requires replacing.

If not the expansion tank can be recharged with a bike pump. With the water off and faucet open to bleed off the pressure pump up the air bladder to the operating pressure of your system.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
    Now I can Plumb!

No water is coming out of the water valve, when pressed.

I'll follow those steps and recharge.
