  • Steam Radiator Air Vent Leaking--System Not Draining?

Live in a 4-floor pre-war coop with steam heating. The airvents on the radiators are leaking water.

Last year, we discovered the riser pipe going down through to the basement had fallen 5 feet over the last several years, which had put enormous strain on the elbow leading to the drain-off in the basement. As a result, it was leaking. Plumbers came in, jacked up the riser so that there was a slight angle down for the drain off. They reported that they took out 30-40 gallons of water from the system that had probably backed up all the way to the 4th floor, which was why our radiators were probably leaking.

One year later, the leaking is happening again. Is it probable that water has backed up through the system again? Is there a way to check this? It is not an issue with defective air vents. Don't know much about how water might back up in steam systems and looking for other opinions.

    Thanks.

couldn't you install a boiler drain in the lowest part of the return condensate line?

Is this a one line or two line system. Are you saying that your radiators on the 4 th floor are filled with water, water coming out of the air vents, and they are still heating on steam
heat? Are there steam traps on the radiators or is there a steam trap in the basement.? Later Paul
