  • Main Drain to Sewer Line

I am looking to replace my cast iron main drain pipe. I have dug up a small portion of the pipe and seen that it goes into an orange-ish pipe. I am assuming this is a clay pipe. It is the main line running to the sewer tank. How do I connect the replacment PVC main drain pipe to this clay pipe, if it is clay?

For referance, my city (pop. about 800) uses septic tanks that drain into a city-wide sewer system.

    Thanks in advance.

The 'orange' pipe you are looking at may be terra cotta clay, but it also may be a paper-type sewer line called "orangeburg".

Either way, you would do best to also remove it and replace with PVC.

But you can connect PVC to either using rubber transition fittings from Fernco.

You can find these fittings at any professional plumbing supplier.

Shielded couplings are available for this application...

Fernco and Mission Rubber are a couple of popular brands...

Did you know some Redwood Pipe is still in service today.
