  • Sodering Pipes with Paint on them.

I just bought a home, and found out that there is no water shut offs except for the main. I really want to install some ball valve shut offs but there is paint on all the pipes. What is the best way to get paint of the pipes so that I can solder them? Sand Paper, Burn if off?

    Any help would be great.

I would think burn it off and then use steel wool to clean up the pipe. But i am no expert!

use a flap wheel or a wire brush on a drill.

I've always used plumbers emory cloth. Work it back and forth with the same motion you use to shine your shoes. It'll come right off.

I deal with this ALOT at work. we paint everything. pipes, bolts, sometimes sightglasses. sandpaper. 220 grit works very well. just make sure you get it all off. don't try and short cut it.

            Plumbers cloth should do fine.

There are varying degrees of coarseness available.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
            Now I can Plumb!
