  • ngatural as generator ????

we are installing a 20kw generac stanby unit 90 feet from the meter. We have put in 1" pipe going straight to the generator from the meter. There is an existing 3/4" line going to the furance and gas logs with 30 feet of pipe for that run. The meter is a regular house service. We were told that the service would need to be upgraded to a 2lb meter. the current system only has the regulator on the street side of the meter and none on the house side. what type of regulators do we need after the new meter is installed, both for the generator and the furance line? Is there any problem with installing the regulator for the generator at the unit instead of at the meter? Is a two pound meter considered high pressure?

The purpose of the upgrade is to give you a larger volume of gas, it should be at the beginning of the run. Your plumber will know what to do.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
    Now I can Plumb!

Did you know some Redwood Pipe is still in service today.

We are doing the work, that's why I'm asking. I know what your going to say - we should have a plumber doing this, but my mother is on a fixed income and cannot afford the price a plumber will charge. She has to have power at all times due to health problems. If we really do not feel comfortable with the last of the connections then we will see how much they will charge for just the connections.

Yes, I do say you should use a plumber for a gas installation.

There are far too many things that can go wrong with disastrous consequences.

But then you do know that.

In most cases on nat. gas you would only be running about 1/4 lb. of pressure into the house . 2 lbs. would be hi pressure for a house. Your equipment in the home is made to take no more than 1/2 lb of pressure on the inlet pressure.
So if you have to go to 2 lbs., you will have to regulate the pressure down for your equipment in the home. You should call your gas co. because they are the ones that have to give you the higher pressure, so they should be able to tell you what all you would have to do. later paul

Also note your natural gas supplier is not going to like you playing with your gas supply in any way shape or form, not only do you risk your property you risk those around you. Gas problems are never small, they escalate into big problems very quickly, so no matter what you do.....do it carefully.
