  • new kitchen -- colour suggestions?

    Hi there,

We're taking the back 500 sqft of our house and turning it from a "poorly laid-out and not used" area, into our new kitchen and eating area! This space is SW facing, and it will have windows on the south and west walls, and small peek windows on the North wall, plus a skylight. Now, we live not far from Buffalo, NY, so it's not exactly balmy here, but if I paint that kitchen white, someone's going to be blinded! Also, I really like using colour -- the bedroom is eggplant, and the living room is red. So, I was looking at using a denim/indigo blue on the cabinets/walls (there isn't much wall space) to go with the light hardwood flooring. Any suggestions/comments? Any better ideas?

    Thansk!

What is your fav color/ Can you see the other rooms from the kitchen. The only problem I see is if any of the other rooms flow into the kitchen. You need to color coordinate your kitchen and do what makes you happy.

Tricia's certainly right about doing what pleases your eyes. Eggplant and red sounds like you do favor strong colors. What color and type furnishings will be in there? What color appliances? You plan to have light color hardwood floor, but will there be any other floor coverings in there, maybe around the table and chair area? Dark colors will certainly help tame the light intensity, but it may be difficult to light at night. Keeping away from shiny finishes will go pretty far in keeping down the harshness of sunlight without sucking the bright out of it. Matte off-white walls and accents would be fine and could make indigo cabinets jump quite nicely. Door/drawer handles and such along with stove burner covers and maybe the toaster/blender covers also in a matte finish to match might go well. Since 500 sq ft is a fair sized area, you could also put up the wall paper ceiling trim to help carry the cabinet colors around without overpowering. You could also divide the eating area from the 'work' area but the shade differnce. Indigo in one, denim in the other. Lots of possibilities here.

I just came on to this site as a new homeowner completely enthralled with home improvements. My girlfriend turned me on to a site www.plan3d.com that I think might help you. On this site you just drag walls to the size of your room and then you can click on a button that says paint and you can try all sorts of colors in the room. You can put furniture and windows and all kinds of things in the room. It's free that's the cool part
