  • Primer Question

What type of primer should I use for the following situation:

I recently had a water leak which required cutting large holes in the drywall to repair. Some of the remaining drywall has water stains. I patched the holes with new drywall and am in the process of finishing the patches (an will attempt re-texturing soon). The paint that I will use is interior enamel (the side of the can says "100% acrylic latex). I thought that latex and enamal were two different things? Any way..I guess thats a different question.

So what I need is a primer that will prep the new drywall and texture, cover the existing water spots, and allow the wall point (acrylic latex enamel?) to stick.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Use a white-pigmented shellac.
The most popular brand is BIN.
It is available at most paint stores and all home centers.

If you cant find a white-pigmented shellac, use an oil base primer.
When it comes to killing stains, always go opposite the solubility of the stain.
The same company that sells BIN, makes an oil based product called Cover-Stain. Both are compatible with latex topcoats.

The cheapest oil based primer is Kilz, but, you get what you pay for. Nobody wants to do the same job twice.
