I have a "new" house built in 1915. The baseboards are beautiful once the stripper has been used, but there's a problem. The walls were initially plaster but drywall has been overlaid. The drywall is too thick at the bottom and butts out over the baseboards. I want to trim it about 2" above the baseboards and feather it back down with vinyl spackle to look more realistic, but realize that there will be a slight bump there in the surface of the wall. Anyone have a brighter idea, or a less time consuming one?

Yes, move.
Just kidding.
I had the same problem and I know exactly what you are talking about. Instead of all the time consuming stuff...which I tried and it never looked right, I removed the baseboards and added more drywall at the bottom. Taped it, mudded it, sanded it, mudded again, sanded it, painted it, reattached the baseboard and voila....no bump, no overhang, nothing at all. It took about 9 days to complete because of the drying times.
