  • Faux Brick Fireplace w/insert

    Hi everyone!

This website is wonderful! I have an ugly red "faux" brick fireplace with a black wood burning insert with shiny gold trim. Thank you all for your experiences, this has already given me several ideas. I want to change the color of the brick as well as the insert. My room is large and can actually handle the dark color but I want to "soften" the look. Has anyone painted an insert? I realize I would need to use a high temperature paint but I don't know how it would actually look. I've never seen an insert any color other than black. I have a mental picture of brushed nickle or something bronze. My home is cozy so I'm not looking for anything extravagant, just comfortable. I also have the issue of the shiny gold trim. Any suggestions will be most appreciated!!

What material is the insert? I am sure it can be painted, but I worry about what it will do when exposed to heat. I like your idea of brushed nickle or bronze. Do you have a picture to show us?

It would end up turning black, I think. Unless you constantly clean it or never burn a fire.

No, I don't have a "before" picture yet. I believe the insert is just metal. We do use it, so we would need the high temperature paint. I watch Changing Rooms on the BBC network and saw where they painted an old fashioned metal surround to a true fireplace, but it's very doubtful they actually use it. It was so beautiful!! Thanks so much for your input!

          Hi Todd,

We do use the insert. Thank you for bringing to my attention that it will probably turn black with soot. The constant cleaning I can do without but I want to change the look so badly. Now I'm going to research cleaning products. Thank you!

            Anne-
How did it end up turning out? We're in the exact same situation and looking for ideas.
