  • Any New Ideas to Remove Textured Paint?

    Hello,

I have read past threads on removing textured ceiling paint; sounds like the advice was to wet it with a spray bottle. Does anybody have any new ideas or products they have come across? I read somewhere mixing in a small amount of rubbing alchol makes the job a bit easier. Thanks for any advice.

Texture paint is a heavy latex paint that is troweled on or may be thin enough to paint with using an extra thick roller. Easiest way of getting it smooth is with an 80 grit open faced paper on a power sander. If it is really thick like a sheetrock "mud" application, spraying with water and isopropryl mixed will loosen it - [very messy!] and scraping it off. It might even remove the sheetrock backer board in the process. Sanding would be my choice even if it is labor intensive.

There is a product you can buy that removes textured paint. I don't remember the name, but it comes in a gallon size paint can, and it's meant to be rolled on with a heavy nap paint roller. Its a very thin product that soaks into the texture and softens it up so it can be scraped off with a paint scraper. I have been told it works well, but it doesn't go far, and it will be very messy. You may also have issues with the smell, but I don't think a respirator is needed.
There is one thing you need to keep in mind before starting your project. Usually when people put a heavy texture over the walls or ceiling, it's to cover something up. Who knows what you will find underneath. If the texture is in good shape, it can be painted with good results. Using a semi-gloss finish won't really make it washable, but it will look much cleaner and add some needed brightness.
