Has anyone ever put wallpaper directly over paneling? If so, did you have good results? I saw some thick textured wallpaper just for this purpose at Lowe's but have to wonder how it looks when finished.

I put wallpaper over paneling in my kitchen and bathroom and office and it really looks great. I have wide border in the living room over paneling. I have small grooves in the paneling and I always use vinyl wallpaper. You can wipe and clean most vinyl wallpaper. There is different kinds of vinyl wallpaper. Vinyl on paper, and vinyl coated, and etc. Just buy an inexpensive roll and try about a 3 foot section to see if it is going to fill the grooves, I always use the best vinyl I can find, for the best price. Make sure the walls are clean. If you have small grooves, just put the wallpaper up as normal and the paste on the back usually fills the grooves, but don't press into the grooves, go up and down to smooth the wallpaper out. Don't stretch the paper, and don't over handle it. Try using a sponge instead of the normal wallpaper smoother. Make sure you activate the wallpaper for the correct length of time, and let it rest. Don't let the paper be extremely wet either, because the wood has to dry. I also use wallpaper border paste sometimes, to help the edges stay down. Try putting up a small piece on the paneling, to see how you like it, and it will come off usually with a little warm water put in a spray bottle. The textured wallpaper usually has to be painted. If you want to fill the grooves, do as Snoonyb replied to fill them. Good Luck
