  • prep popcorn ceiling for crown?

I'm about to put up some crown in the bedroom. I'm using some very basic, single-piece stuff because the celing-to-door height is too short for anything more elaborate. Besides, this is my first crown installation so I figure I should start simple.... Anyway, the molding is going against a popcorn ceiling. My question: Will the texture in the poporn ceiling interfere with the crown installation? Or will nailing the crown in place be eough to "mash" the popcorn bumps flat and out of the way. And if I do have to prep the edges of the ceiling first, then what's a good way to smooth it out with minimal mess?

(Complete removal of the popcorn texture is not something I'm interested in taking on -- too much time and mess for my purposes.)

if you keep the crown moulding a fraction away from the ceiling you should come out with a decent job. smashing the popcorn in one spot is easy but a length of it say.... 15 feet isn't easy. you'll mar the crown much too much even with a rubber hammer.
