And the reason I'm asking my question here is because we're thinking (read: the wife is thinking) about widening it to the point where it almost constitutes removing the entire wall.
The wall in question was at one time an exterior wall, gable end of the house, leading to a porch. That porch was converted to a room, and the doorway was left close to its original size.
To let more light into the adjoining room and give the area a more open feel, we're considering widening the door by two feet on either side, leaving a foot worth of wall to one side and the rest of the wall to the other. The opening would be to one side of the ridgeline.
Above is empty attic space, below is the original concrete block foundation. The opening will be 90" rough measure wide.
One: the gable end wall, parallel to the floor and ceiling joists, is not load bearing, correct?
Two: a beam of 2x6's with 1/2" plywood should be sufficient to safely span the gap, right? Or would 2x8's be better?
