Painting Over Wallpaper

I must be an idiot, but I have promised my mother I will help her redo her guest room. There is wallpaper on the ceiling that is about 15 years old and underneath that, there is wallpaper that is about 25 years old. I refuse to pick all of this wallpaper off the ceiling as it is stuck on very well. I have heard of a product that is like drywall mud that you put over wallpaper to smooth out the edges of the paper where it meets and then you just prime it and paint it. That is what I want to do. Can anyone recommend the proper product or is it just dryall mud? Help! [?]

Doooooon'tttttt dooooooo it........ someone, somewhere down the road, will be upset with you.... LOL.

Seriously. My partner and I just bought a house, and were attempting to remove all the old paper, which has since been painted and patched with joint compound in some spots. Becuase of previous owners' neglect, we are have decided to tear out all the old plaster and put up drywall. There have been too many "make do's" for us to try to do a "make right"

as a side note. The drywall mud you speak of, will be very difficult to get a smooth finish with (especially on a ceiling) unless you are experienced with this sort of thing.

There is (in the wallpaper isle of HD or Lowes) a little hand-held gadget that you roll around, and it scores the paper, so you can use a wallpaper remover and it will soak under the layers, loosening the pastes, and allowing your to scrape it.

I have to agree with MrStan...but if you are going to do it, just use drywall mud. Good luck!
