  • Can oil based sealant be used on a deck that had acrylic used in the past?

I have a 5-year old redwood deck that has been treated with Behr acrylic sealant. This was probably done nearly 2 years ago. Can I use an oil-based sealant now, or should I stick with acrylic or water-based? I'm really new to exterior DIY stuff.

    Hi there!

Given that your deck was treated with Behr acrylic sealant about two years ago, it's generally advisable to stick with the same type of sealant to avoid any issues with adhesion or finish. Switching to an oil-based sealant could be tricky, as it may not adhere well over the existing acrylic coating and could lead to problems with the appearance or performance of the finish. If you're set on using an oil-based sealant, you'll need to thoroughly clean and possibly sand the deck to remove the old acrylic sealant, which can be quite a bit of extra work. To simplify things and ensure the best outcome, sticking with an acrylic or water-based sealant would be the most straightforward and reliable approach.
