  • Front Door Jam Damage

The previous owners of our house had dogs that scratched through the wood of the front door jam to the point where the weather seal no longer seals. When sitting on the livingroom floor you can feel the draft on cold winter mornings

As a temporary repair I tried filling the missing area with caulk, but that didn't make a noticable difference.

I suppose I need to pull off the whole piece of wood and replace it, but I'm not sure what to buy, it has a groove in it for the weather seal to fit into. Is this a standard item at home improvement stores?

Does anyone have any suggestions, advice or guidance?

    Thanks!

Perhaps you can find the manufacturer of the door and see if they will supply a repair stile for the door - otherwise if you are handy with a tablesaw and router, you may be forced to make a new one. Typically a piece of 5/4 pine may suffice or 5/4 oak or other depending on the wood species used.
