Gutters are a must to prevent basement water and foundation damage by frost.

If your house sits above the surrounding property and there is relatively little risk for soil erosion and foundation damage from sitting water, then you really don't gutters. A lot of it has to do with the design and location of your home.

A lot of the new houses don't require gutters according to the architects planning. Also could be because of the house's location tough winters etc where the gutters would be a problem.

started a topic WHY no gutters?

    WHY no gutters?

We just purchased a house and I noticed that it has NO roof gutters installed. The roof is relatively new (~5 yrs) and it has all new soffit and fascia. Is there any reason someone would opt to leave the gutters off? The house is pretty basic shape, 25' x 45', and peaked down the center of the length. My plan was to install them right away, but there's no point if for some reason they're not required.
