Found some rot of a section of bottom plate while searching from the interior, directly below the main entry door of a 1950's Cape style house. It appears that the rot is directly behind a 4 step cement stairway. Any suggestions of either how to go about moving the stairway to access the plate from the exterior or how to replace the section of the plate (about 2 feet of 4x4) from the interior?

if the steps are fastened to the foundation you'll need to uncork the nuts. if it is just snugged up to the foundation, use a heavy duty crow bar and lift up the front and place 1 inch broomstick dowels underneath so you can roll the steps out. use the crow bar against the steps and foundation to pry the steps out on the dowels. use more dowels underneath and two guys should be able to move the steps out.
