Sparkies?? why does power cut out when I turn the kettle on?

yes we live in an older (1960's) unit (dbl brick walls) and when I put two of the following items on at once the power cuts out (safety switch kicks in):

1) Kettle
2) Dryer
3) Microwave

So we can only do one of these tasks at a time. I'm sure a sparky in the past has told me that it is an old home/wiring system so can't be fixed.

Is this right?
Can it be fixed somehow?
Any thoughts?
