I don't know if this is normal or if i have extreme heat loss. My home is built on a crawl and around the base of the house the snow melts very rapidly. I have about a 3-4 inch gap between house and 1-11/2 inches of snow around most of the house but on the driveway side, blacktop comes right against house, i have about a foot gap of no snow. is this a sign of heat loss there, or just natural warm house versus snow?

Seems to me this is a reasonably normal occurrence. Most heat loss is via the roof with poor windows coming in second.
The biggest indication of roof heat loss is snow melt patterns. For example the southern side of your roof should melt uniformly across the whole southern side. Another great way is to compare neighbors roofs with your of the same aspect, if they are in as much sun as you but your roof is melting snow much faster then that's a good indication your losing heat.
Little about a lot and a lot about a little.
