tuck pointing question

One side of our house needs tuck pointing and we need to choose a mason. Do most masons use a squeeze tube-type apparatus to put the mortar into the joints these days instead of an old fashioned trowel? Does it work as well?

nothing replaces good 'ol mortar and a finishing trowel.

Often you will see masons using a mortar bag, it looks remarkably like a cake icing bag, you fill it with mortar, twist the end as you fill the mortar lines, after this you use a tuck point trowel to uniformly recess the joists.
In some cases the mason will only use the tuck point trowel, loading the trowel from the mud board and pushing it in the mortar line with the trowel, not all masons can do this as it's years of experience to avoid making a big mess with making clean up an arduous task.
Depending on the amount of pointing that needs done and how deep the holes are the polyelastic mortar in the tubes (caulk gun style) will work well as a sealer from moisture penetration. If the holes are deep and large then this product won't work as it has no compression strength.
