  • Repairing and protecting brickwork

Hi everyone, what’s the best way to fix cracks in the mortar between bricks on a house? Also, are there any good ways to protect bricks from water damage or weathering?

    Hi there!

Fixing cracks in the mortar between bricks is pretty straightforward. The process is called repointing. Start by carefully removing the old, crumbling mortar to about ½ to ¾ inch deep. You can use a chisel or a small grinder for this, but be gentle so you don’t chip the bricks. Once the gaps are clean, brush out any dust or debris. Mix up some mortar that matches the original in color and texture (you can find pre-mixed options to make it easier). Use a small trowel to pack the new mortar into the cracks, pressing it in firmly, and smooth it out to blend with the rest. Let it dry according to the instructions, and you're good to go!

To protect your bricks from water damage, consider applying a breathable brick sealer. It keeps rain out but still lets the bricks "breathe" so moisture inside can escape. Also, keep your gutters and downspouts clear, and make sure water isn’t pooling near your house. Regularly checking your brickwork for damage can help catch small problems before they get worse.
