  • Replacing drive Tape in old Genie opener

Genie GS-940A unit. 25 years old. Parts are hard to find, but drive tapes (aftermarket) are available. Question: How difficult is it to replace the drive tape? I cannot get the old one out of the power head. I hope it doesn't mean disassembling the whole unit. Help, please.

don't waste your time or money on fixing that thing. It will save you money in the long run, and probably improve safety as well.

Replacing drive Tape in old Genie opener

I got the old drive tape out with only the expenditure of my time. Parts all over the garage floor and a smile on my face. The drive gear was still in good condition. I've ordered 2 new drive tapes (to have a spare for my other two Genie tape drive openers).
I never replace that which has given me good service and can be economically repaired. It worked well for 25 years; now maybe another decade or two. And for far less money than a replacement unit.
Color me thrifty. Reduce, reuse, repair, recycle. In that order.
