  • Genie Garage Door Problem

My Genie garage door will not open or close if I try and use the garage door button in the garage. It will however open with the cars garage door sensor but will not close with the cars sensor or the button in the garage.

Basically you can only open it with the car sensor and cannot close it with any sensor or the garage button.

If you close it manually it will again only open with the cars sensor.

So basically the car sensor will work halfway and the garage button will not work at all.

Also if garage door is all the way open and you click the car sensor the lights will come on the garage door opener but will not go down and again with the button in the garage if you click it the lights won't come on, nothing.

Any ideas.. I have checked sensors and everything and messed with the sensor that stops it from going up and there isn't any lights on the sensors that stop it if something obstructs it, not sure if there was before, but there is still a dim light on the garage button in the garage but it don't do anything up or down. Have unplugged it and plugged in and reset breakers also.

    Thanks..

It's possible the close limit is shorted making it think that it is already closed. Holding the push button will not over ride that.

If you can not close the door with any command and both the red and green lights are lit up on the photo eyes, next step is to check the limit switches.

If its a Genie Excelerator its likely a bad logic board, those are notorious for these types of issues. If you can prove your the original purchaser, they'll send you a new one for free, if not, get a new opener.

If its not a an Excelerator, it sounds like you have two or more issues. The wall button light should be fairly bright, so there may be a problem with the wiring. Also, since the wall button isn't working, you can't override the sensors, which means the door won't close. Try disconnecting the wall button wire at the powerhead and using a needle nose pliers to jump the screws and hold it there for a few moments. If the motor runs, then the wall button or the wiring is bad.

After you correct the wall button, set to work on the sensor issue. Be sure the lights are bright and solid. If the red light is blinking, the beam is not visible.

If these are ruled out, it could be a failing low voltage transformer. Your sensors and wall button run on a 25v circuit, so if the transformer is not producing enough voltage, these items won't work properly. This can be checked with a multi-meter. If you remove the cover, the transformer is on the lower right side and has 4 wires. It looks like a big block. Each lead is marked so check the 25v one to ensure there is voltage.
