  • Craftsman opener will not work with wireless keypad or universal remotes

I have 2 craftsman openers made in Jan 1998 model numbers 139.53677SRT1 both have the same problem

I just bought the 139.53684 wireless keypad that says it is for it according to the manual of the opener.
    (recommended accessories)

I can not get it to program. The overhead light on the opener never flashes (yes the bulb is good)

Keypad is new and has a new battery.

    Instructions say:

    Option 1:
Press and release the learn button (orange) then you have 30 seconds to press a 4 digit code on the keypad and then press and hold enter until the overhead light on the opener flashes which it never does.

Option 2: If you have the premium wall console (which I do) Enter a 4 digit code on the wireless keypad then press and hold enter while holding enter press and hold the light button on the wall console while holding those 2 buttons down then press the bar on the premium console (so all 3 buttons are pressed) until the the overhead light blinks. Which it never does.

I also tried a new genie mini remote that says it is compatible with all openers made after 1997 which I can't get to work either.

Any ideas what is going on?

First a quick question, what remotes do you have right now, if any, that can operate the opener?

Second, the Genie remote will NOT operate your CraftsMan opener. Yes it will operate any GENIE/OverHead Door opener made after 97.

One original remote model 139.53681 which works.

I also have my 2000 Intrepid's integrated door opener working.

Look like you do it all the right way and as it is the same with both openers and everything else works ok, you might have a bad keypad.
I know it's all new, but check and see if the back light comes on, on the keypad when you push a number, behind the number pad it should be yellowish. Check the voltage on the 9 volt battery, I have seen new battery with no power.

What I have found out is if I erase all codes (hold down the learn button for 6 seconds) I can get the keypad to program but...

It will only learn one remote at a time. (except I can still program my integrated car remote)

I can learn both remotes only if I clear all the codes first meaning only one remote will work.

Any ideas why it will only learn one remote?

          Thanks

Edit: From googling my problem it seems like it is not that uncommon of a problem. At least with certain Craftsman openers.
The end result I saw online was to get a different (universal) opener and that solved the problem. Now I have the new universal remote, keypad & integrated car remote all working.

Inquiring minds still want to know why it will not work with 2 remotes are are designed for each other?

Some people were saying that the 2 button remote went bad and reverted to an older technology. That's hard to believe as how would it know what an older technology was if it was not made that way.

I will try to explain as simple as possible. Your code system is what I will call Security+ with orange learn button, the code system before that has a green learn button. The orange has rolling code technology where the green don't, but both has the same frequency 390MHz. If you erase the codes on the orange system you can program remotes for the green system, but you can't add a orange remote after a green and if you start with a orange remote you can't add a green.
