  • Garage door safety eyes

Has anyone tried to mount a set of eyes in parallel to the existing eyes that are mounted near the floor? I would like to add a set of eyes at about bumper height so it could catch a car that is pulled 1/2 way in.
I am not going to raise the existing ones and want to add an extra.
Thanks for the info. I could always make an afterfactory one work but,
If a set just like what I have will work, Im going to do that! (might have to wire in series.) Thanks

    I forgot! I am using a craftsman 1/2 hp opener model 41A5389D

just get another set of eyes - transmitter and receiver and parallel the wiring. the transmitter is just an infrared photo led and the receiver is an infrared photo transistor.

I was going to try that, I was wondering if it work since one may be clear, and the other is blocked. They would be mounted about 16-24" from each other. Thanks, Bill

          One set of eyes only

Undewriters Labratories regulations are designed to protect human life from injury or death. Thus they are designed to prevent injuries and death, with little or no consideration for property damage.

The only way to utilize two or more safety reversal mechanisms is to install a commercial operator with the necessary circuit board technology.

As far as I know, you can not do 2 sets of photo eyes, they are not designed for that and will not work properly if tried. Of course you could always call their customer service center and verify that. If you have chamberlain products AKA LiftMaster, and Craftsman ( many others) or Genie products (AKA Overhead Door co.) their websites give out the number. I will try and add them here later.

Does anyone have a set of specs. for these types of eyes? COuld I possibly use 2 relays and wire them into the back of the door?

Just to let you know, I would like to do EXACTLY the same thing. I had a problem forgetting to close the garage doors. I looked around at the automatic closing systems and couldn't find anything that I really liked. So I designed my own, using X-10 computer controlled systems. It works just as I would like it to work...BUT BUT BUT. I have the system programmed to close the doors at sunset. The other day I returned from dinner just about sunset and was rolling into the garage when the computer decided it was time to close the doors. Luckily, my wheels crossed the sensor beam and reversed the door before it hit the top of my Miata. But if I had been rolling in more slowly, that may not have been the case, because the body of my Miata is ABOVE the mandatory 6" maximum height for the safety beam. So LIKE YOU I want to add a second sensor beam that is as high as my bumper. That would protect my car from accidental damage during closure, even if I park to close to the door.

But not all door closure systems work the same. You will sometimes here the term "dark on" and "light on". Some send a signal when the beam is interrupted and some STOP sending a signal when the beam is interrupted. For those of us that want to have TWO sensors, we want the system to reverse the door when they RECEIVE a signal... so when EITHER beam gets interrupted, the signal is sent and the door reverses. Obviously this won't work if they are both sending signals and only one gets interrupted, because the other will still be sending and the door will not reverse.

So... does anyone know if this has been successfully done? I have a new model Liftmaster door that uses the green and amber light (the earlier models used two green lights). I have not been able to get any information of the signal logic for this door closer. I won't monkey with the current safety system, I just want to add an additional safety logic state.

If you have any information of this subject, please feel free to contact me via email at maccpl@yahoo.com. Any help will be appreciated and I will post any knowledge I gain here for others to learn from

              Cheers,
              MacCp l

note- a properly installed and working (and monthly tested as per the manual) garage door opener with the correct force settings will stop and reverse on your car bumper or trunk/hood well before causing any damage. Best way to accomplish this is to make sure of your opener first. Then install the ole tennis ball on a sting trick where you drive till you hit it with your windshield to know your all the way in. Or, if you are not that hick, liftmaster makes a cool little laser, LM 975, fairly inexpensive that once your car is in the garage correctly, you line up the laser with a spot on your dashboard. Laser will come on only when the door is operated and you pull up till its right. It will work on other makes also.

As you stated, it is against the law to install the primary set of photo yes higher than 6" off the ground due to the possibility of entrapment of a child. But as some one posted above, a non-residential unit, commercial that it, will have the ability you are looking for including an electric sensing edge that will completely take care of what you are trying to accomplish. Hope something in there helps.
