  • control board shot?

    hey gang!
i have a Genie pro 82 1/3hp screw drive garage door. Lately it has been opening up, but once it hits the top limit switch it will not spin down. The motor will not recognize that it needs to spin the other way to lower the garage door. I unplugged the limit switch and now it keeps coming up and up and up no matter how many times i hit the garage door opener (usually if you press it 1 time it goes up no matter how far, and a second time goes down).

My mum is paying me $100 if i can fix it. I called some local garage door guys and they said that this unit is obsolete and they don't manufacture replacement parts anymore.

Does anybody know where i could find replacement parts?
would it be less of a pain to just buy a new unit? how much would a replacement cost?
could i install the unit myself? im not a handy man but i have a bit of experience with electronics and motion systems which is exactly what a garage door opener is.

    cheers!

    opener

Replacing something that old is usually the best option. You should expect a garage door opener to run from about $250 installed to $350. Extra remotes will cost a little more.

You could install one yourself from the hardware store, it is not all that complicated, especially if you try to put it exactly where the old one was.
I don't recommend a screw drive, but for simplicity i would here. If you get a belt or chain drive you will want to lower the motor head a couple of inches, due to different motor rails.
