    hey...
    just wondering if anyone out there would be able to tell me how to build a fieldstone planter approx.3ft wide and approx 10ft long and about 2ft high. some of the planters I would like to build may be alot longer than that.would like to plant a hedge in the middle of the planters. have seen it , just don't know how to do it or go about it,,,very much an amateur,, in dire need of some expertise advice, and step by step instructions

    karry...(appropriate name since you will be carrying lots of stones to and from the site)
    1) you need a good sub base, about 4 to 6 inches, of gravel and sand with no Loam under this.
    2) this has to be level then a 4 inch concrete pad needs to be poured onto this.
    3) get about 3 times as much stone as you think you will need delivered and have them droped in several piles so you can look at every one.
    4) Dry lay as many stones on first row you can and
    5) mix your Portland with good quality sand to a stiff mixture
    6) you will want to make sure you put weepers on bottom so water can not fill your planter up so every 4 feet or so lay a 3/4 pipe under the bed of cement and cut a peice of rope in this pipe so any cement that gets spilled over end of pipe will not fill it. This rope can be pulled out after job is done.
    7) Always dry fit before you cement in try to leave natural cornered rocks for corners and naturally flat rocks for the top row.
    A planter the size mentioned above would take a crew of about 6 people 2 weeks from start to finish.
