The wood sill in which my patio door sits has rotted and needs to be replaced. To replace the sill the door would need to be removed. The door is about 26 yrs old and with the $500 tax credit it would pay to replace the door as well. I was thinking of replacing the door myself, but not sure of the amount of time and skill that is required. I am handy when it comes to plumbing but have never replaced any windows or doors. Is this a job for a novice? If so about how long would it take to replace a patio door? Does this job require two people? What are the steps to remove and replace the door? Thanks.

Replacing a patio door can be a rewarding project, but it does require some careful planning and a bit of skill. Since you’re handy with plumbing, you might find the task manageable, but it’s definitely a step up in complexity. The job could take a full day or even two for a novice, and having a helper is highly recommended since patio doors are quite heavy and tricky to handle alone. You'll need to measure carefully, remove the old door and sill, install the new sill, and then fit the new door in place, making sure it’s level and properly sealed. If you’re feeling unsure, watching some instructional videos or consulting a professional could provide some valuable guidance. With a bit of preparation and patience, you’ll be able to tackle this project successfully and enjoy the benefits of your new door!
