  • Increasing the height of the outer walls

Hi everyone! The outer walls of my house are quite short in height, and I've installed fiber sheets, but I'm not happy with their appearance. Can anyone recommend alternative materials or options that would improve the look of my home? Thank you in advance!

    Hi Gardenboy!

If you're looking to replace the fiber sheets and improve the appearance of your home's exterior, there are several great options to consider. One popular choice is wood cladding or siding, which gives a natural and warm look to your home. You can stain or paint it to match your desired style, though it does require regular maintenance to withstand the elements. Another option is vinyl siding, which is a more budget-friendly and low-maintenance alternative. It’s available in a wide range of colors and textures, including styles that mimic wood or stone. Both materials can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic while being practical solutions for your short outer walls.

For extending wall height, you have several practical options:
      1. Masonry Extension: Adding brick or concrete block courses can seamlessly extend your existing wall's height. This method ensures structural integrity and matches the original wall's material and aesthetic. A professional mason can help you match the existing wall's texture and color.
      2. Precast Concrete Panels: These are manufactured off-site and can be installed quickly to extend wall height. They're strong, durable, and can be designed to match your existing wall's appearance. They're particularly useful for uniform, straight wall extensions.
      3. Reinforced Concrete Panels: If load-bearing strength is a priority, reinforced concrete panels provide excellent stability. They can be designed to specific height requirements and offer good load distribution.
      4. Metal Fencing or Lattice Toppers: For a lighter solution, you could add metal or wooden lattice extensions above the existing wall. These provide additional height while allowing some visibility and air circulation.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly yet durable option for your outer wall extension, here are three great choices to consider. First, fiber cement panels are an excellent option because they’re durable, weather-resistant, and handle moisture and temperature changes really well. They’re also relatively affordable and can mimic the look of wood or stone, giving a polished finish without breaking the bank.

Another option is vinyl siding, which is one of the most cost-effective materials available. It’s lightweight, easy to install, and comes in a variety of colors and styles. While it might not be as durable as some other options, with proper maintenance, it can last for many years and is a great choice if you’re on a tighter budget.

Lastly, consider stucco over a concrete base, which is both affordable and long-lasting. Stucco works well in various climates and provides excellent insulation. It’s also versatile in terms of texture and finish, so you can customize it to match your home’s aesthetic. Synthetic stucco can be a quicker, more economical option if you want to save on installation costs.

Each of these materials balances affordability and durability while offering a unique style to suit your needs!

For a modern, minimalist look, I would recommend fiber cement panels. These are sleek, durable, and low-maintenance. Their smooth finish creates clean lines that suit a minimalist aesthetic, and they’re available in neutral tones that complement modern architecture. They also handle weather well, making them a practical choice for wall extensions.
