IDE and SATA are different kinds of connections for your HDD. SATA/PATA are fairly new (3~4 years).

copy and paste the text... I can't post URL's yet.

      This is an IDEE connection:
      Code:
      ep.sci.hokudai.ac.jp/~inex/y2003/urakata/kumitate-manual/INOHATA-PENIII600/images/ide-HDD.jpg
This is a SATA connection (faster speeds):
      Code:
      zoomcomputers.co.uk/images/serial%20ata.jpg
And if you have a notebook, then give me the model and I can tell you what HDD you need .

For that model it looks like your interface is ATA-6. I do all my computer shopping at Newegg(.)com. But if you can find them cheaper at the B&M stores, go for it.

copy and paste the text (almost made more than 5 posts!!!)

          Code:
          newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2030150380+1035907889&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=380

Sorry about that, but I get tired of policing spam... I hate that it inconveniences members with good intentions!
