Identification Needed

I was looking at a home the other day and ran accross this siding. It appears that something ate the wood at some time. There is no new damage but the damage is limited to only the wood siding. It is all around the house and the detached garage. None of the other trim wood around the windows and doors is affected. I have never seen this before and was looking for suggestions. Thanks

the siding is wood recovered from a barn, i.e. barn boards. The log that the wood was cut from had wood worms or bugs in it. no need to worry it is distressed this way for looks.
