Coffee maker repair

If a coffee maker stops working (a strange smell came from the coffee maker, then the heating unit went cold), is there any way to fix it? It seems nowadays when a small appliance breaks, I just throw it out.
We don't have any shops around here that fix small electrical appliances.

What type of smell,did the coffeemaker have? Sometimes if it quits pumping the water, pour white vinegar in it ,let it go thru a cycle, if that doesnt help Just get another, they are not expensive.
