  • types of sheet rock screws

OK above in the new shower stall walls i am installing some durrock material but in the rest of the bathroom I will use conventional sheetrock mostly 1/2" sheetrock.

I went to buy some sheet rock screws and had 3 choices.

fine thread coarse thread and cement board screws.

QUESTION: Can one type suffice for a all applications?

It's sometimes better to be lucky than smart.

Cement board screws are galvanized bugle head screw. Under the head are two "seams ??" that countersink the screws slightly below the surface of the board. The threaded portion deals with the substance you're fastening to. The coarser threads are for wood. The finer threads are for metal studding. Stainless screws are also available for decks. Longer teflon coated screws are also available for decks, they are green in color. DeWalt makes two different guns for different applications. Higher rpms for sheetrock and cement board and lower rpms for decking.

Nope, The cement board screws have a special corrosion-resistant coating. Notice the ridges under the screw head? They dig a hole in the cement board for the screw head, so the head does not stick up.

The coarse drywall screws are for attaching to wood, the fine are for attaching to metal studs. Definatly use the coarse for your bathroom.
