uneven cooking on gas grill

what can cause this problem?
It is a fairly recent bar-b-q from Kenmore, with a side burner , hit the red button and voooooosh!

But, man there is virtually NO low setting on this bad boy.

It torches...you if I want tot Braise or sear- i can do it from across the street! LOL

I have a similar barbq - maybe the same - underneath where the air - propane mixture orifice is, try adjusting the mixture. Also try keeping the unit out of strong drafts which may allow pure propane to enter the burner assembly
