Good Morning all,
In the quadraplex kitchen/bathroom project I'm presently doing, I will eventually finish the basement too.
My question pertains to insulation. The basement walls are presently insulated with styrofoam rigid with an R factor of 5 (2" thk). I am going to build a full bath and laundry room in 1 area of this basement. Since I am putting the clothes dryer down here, 1 wall will be 2 x 6" or 8" to completely conceal the 4" vent. This is an exterior wall. Should I remove the rigid insulation and replace with fibreglass (to take up the depth of the 2 x lumber) or can I leave it and leave the spaces between the studs unfilled (except, of course, for the rigid already there)? The present situation includes 1 x 3 furring strips ramsetted thru the insulation onto the cement wall. I would like to remove them since their presence interferes with the planning of the new wall. Keep in mind there will be a shower here. I'm worried about moisture build up (even with a high capacity venting fan) because this 45 year old home has had a lot of problems with mold (mainly the reason of renovating). By code, can you mix 2 types of insulation?
