Water pressure & Water Softener

My old water softener blew a seal after just 5 years. What is the reasonable upper limit for household water pressure to not ruin a water softener? Is it normnal for city water pressure to surge occasionally?

What seal was it on what kind of water softner head? What is your city pressure?

I wouldn't think it should be surging either.
