That device should only be used as a last resort if the proper replacement is no longer available. Many newer, more energy efficient compressors will not operate for long using such a device without overheating and eventually damaging the compressor.

compressor coming on and running now but it will not cool down
If the compressor is definitely running but the refrigerator is not cooling properly, someone will likely need to inspect the evaporator (cooling) coil to see what is going on there (see the link below).

no, the compressor is not running. a local repairman over the phone tells me that the compressor is shot and would cost me around $300.00 to fix and it isn't worth putting that kind of money into a 10 year old unit. all of the fans are running. i don't know what to do?????

how can the tech determine what's wrong without even looking at the unit?

That's not what you said in your first message.

I wouldn't trust any 'over the phone' diagnosis as written in stone. The only way to tell for certain is to actually check it out.

the compressor is shot and would cost me around $300.00 to fix
It would be *at least* that, yes.

it isn't worth putting that kind of money into a 10 year old unit
That will be up to you to decide... once you find out *for certain* what the problem is. But considering your fridge was likely close to $2,000 new, it still might be worth while to have repaired.

*I* suggest you have a trained technician (preferably a whirlpool *factory authorized service depot*) actually check the appliance out to find out for sure what the problem is and get a real estimate on repairs. Then you can make an informed decision between repair and replacement if necessary.

In the mean time, disconnect power from the appliance so no damage is done to the compressor if it isn't yet actually the problem.
