On many of those models a failure of the fridge's 'mother board' (mounted on the back of the cabinet) causes the evaporator motor to change speeds erratically and/or power multiple speeds at the same time resulting in what many people describe as a 'howling' sound.
Usually the only way to correct those conditions is to replace the electronic circuit board.
