Kitchen Aid ksss42dw ice maker makes black flakes

My kitchen aid ksss42dw refrigerator ice maker makes black flakes (about 1/2" diameter) that fall into the ice cubes. Any idea what these are and what to do to eliminate them?

    Ice mold flaking

It is a common problem experienced by older Whirlpool icemakers. The flakes are parts of the icemaker's ice cube mold deteriorating.

Whirlpool has changed the material the ice mold is made from. It is brown in color now to distinguish it from the problematic ones. It however costs almost as much as a whole icemaker which is usually less effort to replace.
