    Whirlpool Refrigerator

I picked up a used Whirlpool refrigerator. Freezer on top. Cleaned up unit and plugged in. It stopped running overnight and tripped a ground fault outlet (refigerator on a circuit in garage). Have to unplug the refigerator to get ground fault outlet to reset. Plugging in refigerator trips ground fault. Refigerator does not evey try to start. Any ideas?

A refrigerator should not be plugged into a GFCI receptacle, the motor starting usually causes enough surge to trip it. You need to replace the receptacle with a single receptacle like the following:

Find information, resources and relevant links for cornerhardware.com. This domain may be for sale.

If this is a 15 amp circuit then run a new cable of 14/2 plus ground from the LINE side of the GFCI to the new single receptacle location. If it's a 20 amp circuit then use 12/2 plus ground wire.

Thanks, kactusid. I plugged the fridge into another circuit. The light in the fridge comes on but the fan and compressor do not start. The fan is free spinning.

      Any ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a reset button?
