  • No power to disposal

My Badger makes no noise when I flip the wall switch. There is power coming into and out of the wall switch, but no power at the disposal. I think the disposal is hooked straight to the wall switch, but I guess it could be hooked into an outlet under the sink that is controlled by the wall switch. I can't tell because the cable just runs into a hole in the cabinet.
The only conclusion I can come to is that there must be a short somewhere between where the wire leaves the wall switch and where it comes out of the cabinet. But I don't even see how this is possible. Any ideas? I suppose if there's an outlet there could be something wrong there as well.

More than likely the disposal internal overload protector (breaker) tripped. Look on the very bottom of the motor housing and you should see a small plastic button protruding slightly. Push the button and you should hear a faint click and feel it snap into place as it resets. Now try running the disposal in the normal manner. If it hums or fails to start the cutters are jammed. Again looking on the bottom of the motor, you will see a hole on the end of the motor shaft on the bottom. There is a hex key recess in that hole so you can insert a disposal wrench or allen wrench of the appropriate size to turn the motor and cutter assembly. ( you should have got a disposal wrench with the disposal and it should be in a small vinyl holder attached to the disposal or in a conspicuous place near it.) If you do not have a disposal wrench you can buy one at most hardware or home supply centers for about a dollar.
In the mean time, if you dont have the wrench, Make sure the switch is turned off, the you could try turning the cutter wheel from the top, using a wooden broom handle or sink plunnger handle inserted into the top of the disposal. If it turns free, carefully hold the rubber inlet flaps back and using a flashlight look inside to see if you see any foreign object. It may be something very small like a coin or a can pull tab so look close. You will see a very small gap between the outside edge of the cutter wheel and the disposal housing. That is the grinder section and that is where the obstruction most likely is. If you see something, DO NOT PUT YOUR HAND INTO THE MACHINE. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to reach in and pull it out.
Once the wheel will turn freely you should be able to turn the water on and operate the disposal in the normal manner.
