Maybe someone can help me: My house was built in 1968, and has cast iron pipes. I'm on the city sewer--no septic tank. My sink ties into the line under the house, upstream from where the washing machine ties in. I have had to snake out the line before, as water was backing up into the sink when doing laundry. Well, I'm getting that again, only this time it's only when I wash dishes. The right side of the sink drains pretty well though. Other than some clogging in the lines from the disposal to above the P-trap, or a jam, what else could it be?

On a double sink installation normally both sinks ahare a common P-trap so if one side is draining properly and not the other side, the clog must be in the line from the stopped line between the sink sink outlet/garbage disposal and the tee connection. Very easy to check. place a bucket under the line and disassemble the compression fitting at the tee, then disassemble the tee connection at the disposal output and check the line. Most likely the clog is in the tee itself, as there is a baffle in the tee and clogs often occur at that baffle. A word of caution, if your waste lines are the old chrome plated brass material do not be suprised if a line is corroded and breaks while dissabling. If that should happen, the cheapest solution is to replace the whole double sink assembly with PVC. A whole PVC double sink kit only cost around $8 or $10, and is often much less than the cost of a single tube in the brass systems...R.rinard..journeyman plumber
