  • Water inside Fridge

Today when I went to clean out my refridgerator there was an enormous amount of water on the inside of it. PArt of the water was frozen on the top interior of the fridge but almost the whole crisper drawer was full to the top with water. Any ideas where this might be coming from?

Sight unseen I can think of three possible sources of excess water in the food compartment.

    1. Do you have an ice maker or water through the door?
If so, check to see if excess water is filling into the icemaker, spilling over and running down through the freezer floor into the food compartment or perhaps a water line to the door that has a leak.

    2. Check the inside back wall of the food compartment. Some refrigerator have a small trough near the top of the food compartment on the back wall where moisture accumulates from the freezer defrost system, then flows down a tube through the base of the food compartment and on into a collection pan under the fridge. If the top of that tube is obstructed the water will spill over and end up in the bottom of the food compartment under the crisper drawers.

3.Normally ice droplets forming on the underside of the top of the food compartment are an indication of a defective door gasket or improper door alignment; which will result in excessive outside moisture laden air getting into the food compartment where the moisture will condensate and later drip to the bottom of the food compartment.

Normally the accumulation of any appreciable amount of water would take considerable time to build up. The thing i find puzzling is that you say the crisper drawer was nearly full. Normally the crisper drawers have a shelf covering the drawer which would make it difficult for water to drip and accumulate in the drawer.

You may ask other members of the household if someone intentionally put water in the drawer to soak it for cleaning, or perhaps put a mild solution of water and bleach in to sanitize the drawer.

If you can further narrow down the source of the water please post your findings and we will try to help you correct the problem.

Based on what you said I am going to guess that it is from option 3 because it seems to be forming on the top and dripping down. I dont ever use the crisper drawer so its possible that it has been building up in there for a while.

Testing the door gasket is a very simple procedure and fortunately the tool required only costs $1.

Open the refrigerator door and hold a dollar bill in the doorway, then close the door. Now try to slide the dollar bill up or down. If it will slide easy the doorgasket is not fitting tight.

If it wont move, or is very hard to move that section of the gasket is okay, move to another section and repeat the test until you have gone completely around the door.

If you fnd a section of the gasket that seems loose, check the inner folds of the gasket. Often foodspills get into the folds and stick the folds together hindering the pleats ability to spring and hold the gasket tight against the door.

If you find a section of the gasket stuck, do not pull it apart, you could tear the vinyl. Wet the area with a mixture of water and dishwashing soap and let it stand a few minutes. The sections of the folds should then open up. Once you have it opened up you can continue cleaning it with an old toothbrush and the soapy water.

When you have completed checking the food compartment gasket, check the freezer gasket in the same manner.

If you find a large area not making contact most likely the door is out of alignment.

Most refrigerators have external door hinges on the top of the door to the top of the cabinet. The hinge is covered with a snap on plastic cover.

Snap the cover off and you will see two screws holding the hinge to the cabinet. One screw is in a round hole and the other screw is in a slotted hole.

Slightly loosen both screws they move the door slightly to adjust its position. The hinge will pivot on the screw in the round hole and the slotted hole will allow movement. Once you have the door re-aligned, tighten both screws and replace the plastic cover.

If you find a door gasket that is torn you will have to replace the gasket. Door gaskets can be ordered at any large Appliance parts store. You will need the make and model number off the refrigerator to order the new gasket.

Be very careful when inspecting the gaskets to insure you dont tear it. Some of the door gaskets are quite expensive.
