  • Noisy Disposer

I have an 8 year old 3/4 hp Kenmore disposer that for the last 3 months has been making a terrible vibrating noise. I have looked inside of it and find nothing stuck in it. Could it be the main bearings are bad already? We use the disposer sparingly and thought it should have lasted longer.

    Thanks!

Although some commonly work for up to 10 yrs, Five to seven years is the expected life of most residential service disposal units.

If the unit is working okay, but seems to be making excessive noise the most likely cause is a loose slinger mount. Although the noise of a loose slinger can be irritating it is not necessarly harmful to the machine. In operation the slingers only throw the foodstuffs against the outer wall of the disposal body where it is then drawn down into the cutter/ grinders on the outer edge of the rotator.

There are bearings on both the upper and lower ends of the motor shaft, but they are not user servicable, therefore, if the noise is coming from the motor bearings the solution is to replace the unit.

Thanks for the response. Is there any way to tighten a loose slinger mount? Again, thanks for the response

The slingers cannot be tightened as they are loosely mounted on factory pressed in pins. When the rotory plate is rotating they are swung outwards by centrifical force, but to prevent damage they are designed to be able to swing away if they hit a hard object.

Usually the slingers either get stuck in place by corrosion or the swivel mounts wear and they are loose to rattle. Either way, it has little or no effect on the overall operaton of the disposal.

Thanks again. I broke down and purchased a new Sears Kenmore model this morning and put in today. It is much better. I guess it was time retire the old one to the garbage can. Thanks for your help.
