  • Maytag gas dryer

I have a Maytag gas dryer (natural gas, model pyg4500aww), bought about 2 years ago. I am getting an odor from inside, almost smells like lighter fluid. It does heat and exhaust, and I cleaned the lint screen and blower of all dirt, but I only get the odor when it is running, and I don't have a gas leak when it is not running.

I can think of three possibilities right off......

    1. On the back of the machine there should be a removable cover on the air duct. Unplug the machine and open the cover, then remove any lint that may be built up in there that would restrict the airflow.

    2. Check the motor carefully. Make sure there is no lint build up on the ends of the motor housing that might prevent it from drawing air in to cool the motor. (if the motor is overheating it will make a terrible smell)

3.check the inside of the drum carefully to see if there may be a piece of tar or plastic stuck on the drum that is making a smell when it gets hot. Depending on what kind of work the members of your household do, it is easy for foreign gook to get in from the work clothes,,,that is a big problem in my line of work.
