  • refrigerator not working

I recently purchased a refrigerator out of a trading times. It worked great when we looked at it. I bought it home and it didn't work for 3 days I unplugged it for 3 days. I plugged it up for one last try and it works today is there a reason for this should I be worried. the frige is a new looking whirlpool model #ED25DQ.

    thanks

Sometimes when you move a refrigerator, the freon gets repositioned and you should not plug it in for a few days until it settles down. I have had this happen if the fridge has been laid down during transport. It is also a possibility (this just happened to me) that your kitchen is too cold. Our brand new fridge just did this and the newer models are not equipped to work in conditions where the room is less than 55 degrees. As it began to warm up in the kitchen, the fridge started working again.

great care must be taken when transporting a refrigerator. Never lay a refrigerator on its side during transport as oil from the compressor can get into the capillary tube and restrict it. Sometimes if that happens they can be stood up and allowed to sit idle for a day or two, then they will work, but their is a strong likelihood that the oil will not settle back and it would require a very expensive procedure to clean the capillary tube before it could be made to work. Most refrigeration techs do not have capillary cleaning tools and do not mess with it..they just condemn the system.

somebody tole you a story..there is nothing that would prevent a refrigerator from working below 56 degs. In fact, they should work better at that temp.

They will not work below 36 to 40 deg because there is no heater in them and the refrigerator section would get tooo cold from that ambient air, but that would not prevent the refrigeration process from working. In fact, you could install a 25 watt light bulb and keep the light on full time and they will work down to zero degrees or below.

LP--you would NOT believe the refrigerator hell we've been through since we moved here! I bought brand new appliances and we have had 8 (count'em) 8 refrigerators! The Sears Repair Man (Jim) is now a really good friend because he practically lived at our house for several weeks--one of my buddies said, "Hey it's Thursday...where's Jim???"

The kitchen (when he came over to check the fridge the last time) was a balmy 32 degrees at the time. He told me that a lot of people are putting fridges in garages and its been so cold he's hopping all around the county telling everyone the same thing. Luckily, when our first fridge went "out" (after three days) Sears bought us two of those little bar fridges and if you turn them up to "coldest" they will keep the food frozen (if it still is already) indefinitely. I have learned to just keep a minimal amount of things in the big fridge's freezer now.

I had some frozen bread dough, and wasn't opening the freezer compartment to retain some of the cold. Welllll when I DID finally open it, it was like one of those "I Love Lucy's" and we had a big poofy PILLOW of raised bread ooze out at us. Made some killer french toast tho....when you have lemons...

I asked Jim if it didn't seem peculliar that in the 155 years this house has been here--someone MUST have had a dang fridge in that kitchen and there aren't any heater ducts, so I'm thinking it's never been any warmer than it is right now. He said that the NEW ones are not built as well as the old ones and do not contain the insulation the old ones did. Well duh. You pay $1500 for the stupid things and they last about 5 years. The old ones were about $300 and it wasn't unusual to replace them in 20 years...and it was because you didn't like the color--not because they quit working!
